WOOD BADGE WE6-49-11

Dan Marks, Troop Guide

Dan is the Advisor of Venture Crew 362 and is an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 362 in La Mesa, CA.   He is also a trained Leave No Trace counselor and Trailboss.

Dan started Scouting in Los Angeles as a Cub Scout in the late 1950’s, earning what was then called the Webelo Award (now the Arrow of Light) in 1961.  He rejoined Scouting thirty six years later as a volunteer with Pack 362, and has spent the past nine years as a Committee member and ASM in Troop 362.

Dan is a proud Bobwhite, graduating with Wood Badge Class WE-4-49-03.  Following his Wood Badge training, he completed the SDIC High Adventure Team’s Specialist course in 2004 and Powder Horn in 2005.  Dan also served on Philmont faculty in 2004 and attended the 2005 National Scout Jamboree as an Assistant Scoutmaster.   As an active member of the Council’s High Adventure Team, Dan has helped to train hundreds of Scouts and adult leaders in the finer points of backpacking, trek planning, and trail construction.

Dan holds the Unit Leader Award of Merit and District Award of Merit along with several other Scouting awards.  He is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, and is an active member of the Philmont Staff Association and Pacific Crest Trail Association.

When not Scouting, Dan works as a Financial Officer for SEIU Local 221.  He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Business Administration and Financial Management from National University, and is a Certified Management Accountant.  Dan’s son, Sam, is an Eagle Scout, Venture Crew President, and Assistant Scoutmaster.   Dan also has two daughters.  His oldest, Jenna, lives on the North Shore of Oahu, and is working towards her Master’s Degree in Psychology at the University of Hawaii.  His youngest daughter, Kerilou, is a senior at Steele Canyon High School and has worked with many Scouters on trail construction projects at Mataguay and on the Pacific Crest Trail.
