WOOD BADGE WE6-49-11

Conrad Olson, Assistant Quartermaster

Conrad currently serves as Mission District Representative to the Activities & Civic Service Committee for San Diego-Imperial Council.

Scouting values and experience are central to Conrad’s family. As a boy, he enjoyed being a Cub Scout in Ocean Beach and Point Loma. He reconnected with scouting when his son, David, asked to join Cub Scout Pack 546, invited by his closest friend. While David was in Cub Scouts, Conrad helped in various ways, including with membership and managing pack finances. When David started in Cub Scouts, Conrad’s daughter, Hannah, also began her own path in Girl Scouts. Conrad’s wife, Cheryl, has years of experience in Girl Scouts, going back to her childhood in Indiana, where her mother was a Girl Scout leader. Cheryl quietly supports everyone’s efforts in scouting.

Prompted by the example of several Pack 546 leaders who enrolled in Wood Badge training, Conrad wanted to see the bigger picture and to help build connections between scouting and the community. He is in the midst of completing Wood Badge training for WE4-49-09 and thinks of himself as a pre-Owl. Because David was at a hinge point between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts when Conrad started Wood Badge, Conrad’s work focuses on training, or on efforts at district or council. He served as volunteer lead for Scouting For Food for Mission District in 2010, and is continuing as council volunteer lead for 2011. He represents Mission District to the council Activities and Civic Service Committee, and is assisting with several Centennial events, including the Council Camporee. He has served as an instructor for National Youth Leadership Training and as a trainer for Leave No Trace, is involved with exploratory discussions for a pilot program between the council and the San Diego Center for Children, and is treasurer and trainer for Point Loma Troop 24.

He and Cheryl married 27 years ago in San Diego. Their family belongs to the parish of St Agnes in Point Loma, where they sing in the choir. Conrad serves as catechist to sixth- and seventh-grade students, and is beginning as lead for the parish Mission Circle. He is trained in communications, with experience in non-profit foundations and businesses in San Diego. He works in Company Operations at Guild Mortgage Company.
